Smeal College Of Business

Smeal College of Business provides programs that are connected in many ways. Take shared courses to obtain multiple master’s degrees, or begin with a graduate certificate and progress to a master’s program. These are only a few examples of the customization options for the Smeal experience. We will work with you to create a strategy as unique as your goals. One of the top executive MBA programs in the world is the Pennsylvania State Smeal MBA.

Our Background

The Penn State Smeal College of Business has developed steadily since its founding in 1953, expanding its graduate and undergraduate programs, executive education, and significant research centres.

The Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal, College of Business has established in 1990 thanks to a kind donation from Frank P. Smeal ’42 and his wife, Mary Jean.

At the time, the Smeals’ gift to the college was the most significant individual donation in the University’s history. It established a separate endowment for program excellence in addition to five endowed chairs. The Goldman Sachs & Co. and Frank P. Smeal, University Endowed Fellowship in Business Administration, was also a project that Mr. Smeal helped to create.

Application Essay Questions:

The candidates must answer one essay question and one video essay question as part of the application.

Short answer essay question

What are your immediate and long-term professional objectives? How has your experience prepared you to accomplish these objectives? How do you see your MBA background integrating with this strategy? (600 Words Only)

TIP:  You will need to complete a few tasks to write a successful essay response to this relatively traditional prompt (though only sometimes in the order we are about to present them).

  1. State your short-term post-MBA goal as well as your long-term aspiration clearly.
  2. Confirm that the relationship between these two goals is apparent; if not, provide the necessary context or justification to show how and why you can reasonably and successfully move from one to the other.
  3. Describe the knowledge and experience you currently have that position you for success in the roles and industries you desire. Also, describe the knowledge and experience you still need to acquire through an MBA education (thereby demonstrating your understanding of what is necessary to reach your stated goals).
  4. And finally, determine what opportunities and experiences Smeal provides that other top business schools do not, ideally, to help you develop the skills and exposure you currently lack.

Video Question And Answer

You will need to answer a series of interview questions using a webcam. You will be given a specific time to think about your answer for each question and a fixed amount of time to speak as the system records. Although the system allows for unlimited practice sessions, you will only have one chance to respond to each question once the formal video interview process has begun. You must complete this step separately from the Penn State Graduate School application before the committee deems your application complete or evaluated.

For the technical prerequisites To get started, go to the video application website. An internet-connected computer with a working webcam and microphone is required.

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes are needed to complete all the questions. You can sign up for the system in advance and conduct your interview whenever is most convenient.

TIP:  Required video components, especially spontaneous ones like this, can quickly fill business school candidates with dread. Remember that these video questions are not intended to mislead you or to persuade you to say or do anything that would automatically disqualify you from further consideration. Instead, the admissions committee can usually learn more about you, your characteristics, energy level, conversational skills, and other intangibles by watching videos that put a “face” to your written application.

The video makes you uncomfortable and puts you under some pressure. However, with the help of the video questions, the school can observe how you behave under pressure and naturally, which reveals more about your true character. Instead of being pressured by this fact, try to look at it as an opportunity to show Smeal who you are and how excited you are to participate and share. Let your personality shine through and go beyond the stats and constricting boxes of the written application.

The best way to ensure your answers are perfect is to practice in front of a mirror while maintaining a natural expression. When you participate in the formal interview, you will only have one opportunity to record your responses. Unfortunately, you will only be able to rerecord something or try another time again if you make a mistake while answering or are ultimately dissatisfied with any of your answers. You might feel anxious about this, but try to look at it from a different angle.

Therefore, laugh or shrug and continue with your response if you stumble for words or lose your train of thought. The admissions committee will have a more positive and genuine impression of your personality if you accept a mistake with grace and humor than if you overprepare and adhere to a rigid script.

Optional essay

Although it is not an essay, the additional information is to know more about the candidate.

TIP: Provide anything you believe the admissions committee needs to know to properly and fairly evaluate you. This could be a confusing or problematic aspect of your application (such as a gap in your academic or professional history, an unusual recommendation source, a low GPA, or a low GMAT/GRE score). On the other hand, it could also be an exceptional trait that makes you stand out from other candidates.

Being from the IIM pool (Indian IT Male), I was one among a lot of crowds as I didn’t know how to differentiate myself from rest. I knew I needed help and I wanted to work with someone who had gone through the journey, completed his MBA in the United States and could in turn give me the right guidance.
