Application Essay Questions:
The University of Washington Foster School of Business requires applicants to submit two average-length essays. Still, applicants may submit two more, allowing them to expand on what they believe to be the most compelling aspects of their application.
Short answer essay question
Essay on an Inspirational Experience (500 words maximum) – Tell us about a situation that helped you pursue an MBA or that helped you make that decision.
TIP: This essay expands on the “why do you need an MBA?” and you have to explain why you need to do an MBA. In your first essay, you must explain to the admissions committee what you hope to gain from the experience of pursuing a degree to position yourself for success in the job market once you graduate. In other words, the underlying message is that you understand that you need certain skills or knowledge to be successful in what you want to do professionally and that the MBA is a great way to quickly and completely acquire them.
First essay question
Post-MBA Plans (maximum of 750 words) – Share your thoughts about your career goals in the future. What are the weaknesses or gaps preventing you from wanting to pursue these potential career paths at the moment? How do you intend to fill these gaps and advance your career during your time in the Foster MBA program?
TIP: Although the wording in Foster’s prompt is different, the overall essay the school is essentially asking for here covers many of the major topics covered in a conventional personal statement—what your goals are, why you want an MBA to achieve them, and why you need the degree from the school you are applying to. The best approach is to write honestly and authentically.
Second essay question
Essay on an Inspirational Experience (500 words maximum) – Tell us about a situation that helped you pursue an MBA or that helped you make that decision.
TIP: The best way to place yourself for success in the job market after graduation is to explain to the admissions committee in your initial essay what you expect to gain from the experience of pursuing a degree. In other words, the underlying theme is that you realize that the MBA is a wonderful way to quickly and thoroughly acquire the skills or knowledge you need to be likely to succeed in what you want to do professionally.
Optional essay
Include this essay, which has a word limit of 500. If you have additional information, you think the admissions committee will find useful in evaluating your application.
TIP: If necessary, use this opportunity to address any concerns an admissions officer might have regarding your candidacy, including a low GRE or GMAT score, an unexpected gap in your employment history, an unusual recommendation form, weak academic areas, or a disciplinary or legal matter. Do not merely try to fill this space because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you, even though Foster does not specify that this essay is purely for explaining potentially problematic aspects of your profile, opening the door for you to share other types of stories and information. Write a brief piece about it if you genuinely need to draw attention to or share a significant aspect of your resume that would make your application insufficient if included. Refrain from being excessively verbose or sharing more information than is necessary because submitting an optional essay asks the already overburdened admissions readers to put more effort into reading your application.
